As someone who always wants to learn new things but often lacks the intrinsic motivation to follow through, I am very excited about our next assignment in CEP 810: the Networked Learning Project. Over the next few weeks, I will learn a skill of my choosing using only online resources to guide me, and I’ll be documenting the process here!
I’ve chosen to learn calligraphy, and after a lot of research I’ve decided to focus specifically on the copperplate style. I like how flowy and elegant it is-- it’s the sort of classic style that comes to mind for me when I think of calligraphy. I also love the idea of learning something so old fashioned using the internet-- it feels like technologies colliding.
So far I’ve been gathering online resources to help me learn (and watching a lot of inspiring youtube videos to get hyped up about it). The r/Calligraphy subreddit has been really useful to find my footing and figure out where to start-- it has a glossary, a beginner's guide, and a tons of posts from members sharing knowledge and advice.
The first major lesson I've learned on this journey is that not all calligraphy pens are equal, and that the set I borrowed from a friend is actually the wrong kind for the script I'm trying to learn! So my next step is to purchase an oblique holder and the correct nib (this one was recommended by a friend) and take another stab at it.
