This week, I was tasked with drafting a 21st century lesson plan that integrates technology into the classroom in a meaningful, TPACK-approved manner. I chose to design an activity that could fit within the 4th grade Language Arts unit on Literature, and that will be facilitated by 4th grade homeroom teachers/assistants, the technology instructor, and myself. Students will have previously explored story elements and reading comprehension strategies, and have foundational skills in Scratch programming. In this lesson, students will apply their literature and programming knowledge to plan a storyboard and code a book trailer for a novel they have read.
This assignment was definitely a challenge for me-- this was my first time writing a lesson plan, and while I’m familiar with many of the units covered at my school, I don’t have intimate knowledge of specific standards and grade level objectives. I wanted to be mindful of TPACK and choose a technology that students have some familiarity with but have likely never used in this way before, and that would enhance and extend the content rather than distract from it. It was fun for me to imagine an activity that would tie in with an existing unit and (hopefully) be both challenging and engaging for students.
